Closing the year strong: news updates from Amazon Freight

It’s been an up and down year in freight to say the least. But the industry and shippers have shown resiliency and there are positive signs that the holiday shopping season has been strong.

At Amazon Freight we’ve had a lot going on and are eager for 2024. Here is a quick look at the top happenings from across the business.

1. On the green track

Last month, BNSF Railway recognized Amazon for our achievements in sustainability. We received one of the BNSF Sustainability Awards for 2023 . The award honors the companies BNSF partners with who are making their operations more environmentally friendly. As BNSF puts it, it’s their acknowledgement of organizations that are “on the right track when it comes to sustainability.”

Sustainability is a critical priority for Amazon. We co-founded The Climate Pledge and are committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Decarbonizing Amazon’s transportation network is a key part of reaching this goal and Amazon is investing in solutions across global, middle, and last mile to help reduce emissions.

2. The Future of Freight

Our events season peaked last month at the FreightWaves Future of Freight Festival. As always, the event was a great opportunity for us to meet with customers and shippers in-person. Between the challenges they are facing and questions about new tech such as AI and LLM, it was a chance for us to hear what shippers today are focused on.

We also had some time on the main stage. Rebecca Salt, Director at Amazon Freight, was interviewed by Rachel Premack, the editorial director of FreightWaves. Rebecca discussed some of the lessons that shippers have learned from the pandemic and how that will impact their freight transportation strategies moving forward. Check out the full interview here .

For us, one of the top highlights came on the last day. FreightWaves named Amazon Freight as the #1 freight-tech company for 2024 . The award was part of FreightWaves’ latest FreightTech 25 list, which recognizes the most innovative companies in freight. It is the fourth time Amazon Freight has secured the top spot. As Salt said, the award acknowledges our technical advancements but, more importantly, is “proof of our customer obsession and how we keep innovating for shippers.”

We hope you finish 2023 strong and look forward to the new year.

The question isn’t whether a shipping surge will happen. It’s whether you’ll be ready when it does. The good news: With the right planning, processes, and freight provider, you can scale quickly and confidently. Here’s how.
Many businesses struggle with a fundamental challenge: their shipment volumes don’t fit neatly into traditional freight categories. They’re too large for parcel services but too small to justify full truckload rates. This is where small freight shipping becomes not just relevant, but essential.
As businesses grow and change, so do their shipping needs. What started as a few parcels a day can quickly turn into pallets and the need for a more deliberate strategy. We break down the three modes and explore how to determine which will work best.
