For successful shippers, the little things are big things. Our research shows that Differentiators—those that optimize shipping to gain a strategic advantage—see shipping as something much more than just moving freight. In part three of our series on what sets top shippers apart, we’re exploring how they leverage technology to work smarter and prepare for disruptions long before they ever occur.
It is always better to start at the beginning. If you haven’t read our earlier installments, don’t miss part one and part two.
Everything is in the details
Differentiators are detail-oriented, which can save time and resources in the long run by preventing problems before they occur and ensuring smoother operations throughout the delivery process.
For example, Differentiators don’t worry as much about damaged goods because they have clear, proactive processes in place. Among respondents, 61% of Differentiators said damage-free shipping is extremely important to measuring successful shipping, compared to 57% of Essentials, highlighting a strong emphasis on quality control.
Differentiators begin with the end in mind, and their focus on quality starts with preparing packages. They invest significant time on preparation to reduce issues downstream, with half saying it is their most or second-most time-consuming task. In other words, they know pains now will be gains later. If shippers are regularly dealing with damaged goods, service suffers.
Tech is critical
Technology in the supply chain isn’t a silver bullet, but ignoring it is no longer an option in today’s operating environment. Steady, incremental improvements in supply chain technology are improving visibility and efficiency. Some technologies, such as tracking, have become table stakes to monitor freight, identify and mitigate disruptions, and improve planning.
Smart shippers are already embracing tech and understand how to leverage it effectively. Half of Differentiators are extremely likely to use tech to improve their operations, compared to 22% of Essentials. Staying ahead increasingly means using technology, which is becoming more accessible to shippers of all sizes and making them more proactive.
Shippers that aren’t investing in their own systems can take advantage of their transportation providers’ solutions to access advanced capabilities without the expense. There is no reason to invest in technology simply for technology’s sake, but the right solutions can drive the continuous improvement and adaptability modern logistics demands.
An eye on the future
While technology helps day-to-day operations run more smoothly, the real test of a shipper’s strategy is how well it holds up when something unexpected happens.
Geopolitical uncertainty, extreme weather, and labor issues are among the top issues facing the supply chain. Even a flat tire or traffic jam can lead to significant delays. Differentiators understand that disruptions happen, and 79% said they are either “extremely” or “very prepared” to handle shipping challenges, compared to just 41% of Essentials.
Those preparations can’t occur without awareness. Differentiators indicated that they are more concerned about the potential impact disruptions will have on operations, with 28% of Differentiators saying disruptions have a very negative impact, compared to 7% of Essentials. The lessons from Differentiators make it clear that a successful operation combines mindset, planning, and tools to turn shipping into a competitive advantage.
According to one respondent: “Consistency and timing are key because if our packages don’t reach our customers in a timely fashion, then we will be overloaded with questions and complaints regarding the matter.”
